Understanding your domain status

What the common domain statuses mean, from active to redemption, and what to do about them.

Every domain has a status that says what state it is in. You may see these terms in a WHOIS lookup, in an email about your domain, or when you talk to our team. Here is what the common ones mean.

While a domain is being set up

  • Pending registration means the new domain is being registered. This usually finishes within a minute or two.
  • Pending transfer means a transfer is underway. Transfers can take several days. See Transferring a domain to Dotweb.

For active domains

  • OK or Active means everything is in order and nothing needs your attention.
  • Transfer lock (client transfer prohibited) stops your domain being moved without your approval. This is normal and recommended.
  • Hold means the domain is temporarily not resolving. This can happen during checks or if action is needed.

When a domain is expiring or expired

  • Expired means the registration period has ended. Renew it as soon as possible to keep it.
  • Redemption means the domain expired a while ago and can only be restored for a limited time, often at a higher fee.
  • Pending delete means the domain is about to be released and can no longer be restored.

Don't let a domain lapse

The safest way to avoid losing a domain is to keep auto-renew on. See Turning auto-renew on or off for a domain.

Analytics

Analytics shows us which pages and features are used, so we can improve the site. We also record what you search for in the knowledge base and the domain search, to improve the site and our help articles. Sessions may also be recorded to see where pages are hard to use, with everything you type into forms and the text of your searches masked in the recording. Our analytics partner stores the data in the EU and anonymizes IP addresses. Nothing is set or sent unless you switch this on.
