Transferring a domain to Dotweb

Move a domain from another registrar to Dotweb: prepare it, find it in our domain search and complete the order.

If you already own a domain at another registrar, you can transfer it to Dotweb so your domain and your services sit in one place. For most extensions, a transfer also extends your registration.

Before you start

At your current registrar, get the domain ready to move:

  • Unlock the domain. Turn off the transfer lock, sometimes called the registrar lock.
  • Get the authorization code. It is also called the EPP code or auth code. Keep it at hand: the transfer can’t go through without it.
  • Check the contact email. Make sure you can receive email at the domain’s registrant address, since some transfers have to be approved there.

Recently registered or transferred domains

Most registries don’t allow a transfer within 60 days of registering a domain or moving it between registrars. If your domain is very new, you may need to wait before you can transfer it.

Start the transfer

  1. Search for your domain in our domain search, on the Domains page or the home page. Because it is already registered, it shows as Taken, with the message “Do you own this domain? Transfer it to us by clicking here.”
  2. Follow the link in that message. Our checkout opens on the domain’s page.
  3. Choose the billing term, the number of years you want, and check that the domain name is right.
  4. Fill in (or check) the registrant details: the name, email, phone number and address of the domain’s owner. The organization is optional.
  5. Press Add to basket, then check out.

Your authorization code

Have the authorization code ready when you order, because the transfer needs it. If we need the code from you, our support team will get in touch and help you through it. You can also contact support at any time.

After you order

Transfers typically take about five to seven days. It varies by extension, and by how quickly the transfer is approved at your current registrar. Your domain keeps working during the move.

Analytics

Analytics shows us which pages and features are used, so we can improve the site. We also record what you search for in the knowledge base and the domain search, to improve the site and our help articles. Sessions may also be recorded to see where pages are hard to use, with everything you type into forms and the text of your searches masked in the recording. Our analytics partner stores the data in the EU and anonymizes IP addresses. Nothing is set or sent unless you switch this on.
