Changing your nameservers

Step by step instructions for pointing your domain at Dotweb or at your own DNS provider.

You can change the nameservers on any domain registered with Dotweb yourself, in the client area. If you are not sure what nameservers are or which ones you need, read Nameservers explained first.

Change your nameservers

  1. Sign in to the client area (opens in a new tab) and open Products & Services.
  2. Choose the domain you want to change.
  3. Open its nameserver settings, and enter the nameservers you want.
  4. Save the change.

Which nameservers to use

Dotweb’s nameservers. Choose these if your website or hosting is with Dotweb. It is the right choice for most people. Enter all four:

ns1.dotweb.io
ns2.dotweb.io
ns3.dotweb.io
ns4.dotweb.io

Your own nameservers. Choose these if your DNS is managed somewhere else, for example at another host or a service like Cloudflare. Enter the nameservers they give you, for example ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com.

Where to find your nameservers

Your DNS or hosting provider gives you these. They usually appear in their control panel or in your welcome email, and they normally look like ns1.theirname.com and ns2.theirname.com.

Two things to keep in mind:

  • Most domains need at least two nameservers.
  • Each one must be different.

After you save

Changes take time to spread

The change can take up to 48 hours to reach everyone on the internet. During that time some visitors may still reach the old location, and others the new one. This is normal and settles by itself. There is nothing to fix and nothing to save again.

If you can’t change them

A domain that is still being registered or transferred can’t have its nameservers changed until that finishes. If you are stuck, open a support ticket (opens in a new tab) and we will help.

Analytics

Analytics shows us which pages and features are used, so we can improve the site. We also record what you search for in the knowledge base and the domain search, to improve the site and our help articles. Sessions may also be recorded to see where pages are hard to use, with everything you type into forms and the text of your searches masked in the recording. Our analytics partner stores the data in the EU and anonymizes IP addresses. Nothing is set or sent unless you switch this on.
